SC manhattan CAT GMAT

by harshit.ag16 Tue Jan 06, 2015 10:27 am

Independent contractors pay higher taxes and paid less consistently than are statutory employees, but they, unlike statutory employees, are freely allowed to perform the same type of work for multiple businesses.
a.) taxes and paid less consistently than are statutory employees, but they, unlike statutory employees, are freely allowed to
b.) taxes and are paid less consistently than statutory employees; unlike statutory employees, though, independent contractors are free to
c.) taxes, are paid less consistently than statutory employees, and, unlike statutory employees, they may freely
d.) taxes and are paid less consistently than are statutory employees; in addition, unlike statutory employees, independent contractors can freely
e.) taxes and paid less consistently than are statutory employees; moreover, unlike statutory employees, they are allowed to

I got this question in Manhattan GMAT CAT test.
My doubt is, which of the following is the correct version ?:
-Individual contractors are paid less consistently than statutory employees
-Individual contractors are paid less consistently than are statutory employees

Hello Expects -

My question is about correct choice "B" -

Choice B - taxes and are paid less consistently than statutory employees; unlike statutory employees, though, independent contractors are free to

Do we really need "unlike" and "thought" both in it. I understand "B" is the best we have got and so is the correct answer. However , as per my understanding , the sentence is conveying two opposite ideas -

idea 1 - Individual Contributes (IC) pay more taxes and are paid less consistently than statutory employees.(SE)
idea 2 - IC can perform same type of work in different businesses. This flexibility has not been provided to SE.

So the below construction also conveys the meaning clearly. Why do we need "though" here.

IC <does something & are paid less>; Unlike SCs , ICs have additional flexibility.

It is funny , but while writing all this down , I am clear now . But I will wait for your response to be 100% sure. :)

Good job analyzing the meaning of the sentence. As you wrote, there are two points about independent contractors:
idea 1 - Individual Contributes (IC) pay more taxes and are paid less consistently than statutory employees.(SE)

This is basically a bad thing for them.
idea 2 - IC can perform same type of work in different businesses. This flexibility has not been provided to SE.

This is basically a good thing for them. The word 'though' conveys the contrast between the two ideas. In the other answer choices 'in addition', 'moreover', and 'and' don't show this contrast and are therefore inferior to answer B.

However, the word 'unlike' isn't concerned with this structure; it's used to show a difference between independent contractors and statutory employees in the construction 'unlike NOUN, NOUN'. So we have two contrasts mixed together in a complicated sentence meaning that we do need 'though' and 'unlike' in answer B.
