SC guide--present perfect.

by zhangchenyuan Tue Mar 27, 2012 10:03 am

From SC Guide 8th Edition - Pg109

can anybody give me a example of the situation below? I don't quite understand that.

this is a statement from the SC Guide: "Note that it is fine to write Veronica has traveled all over the world and omit any specific, completed time reference. In this case, you are making a statement about Veronica today (the kind of person she is, her experience and qualities, etc.). Because of this emphasis on the present time, the Present Perfect tends to work better in sentences with Simple Present than in sentences with Simple Past or Past Perfect."

due to the fact that "if you want to talk a specific, completed time period, use the Simple Past, not the Present Perfect", I don't get the meaning in the statement.

pls explain how to use the strategy.
THX A LOT!

This is from the 4th edition BTW, not the 8th. Present perfect is used when the action is still relevant. When we use present perfect it indicates that Veronica may still be traveling. If we used simple past it would mean that Veronica traveled in the past but is done traveling, as though that were a phase she grew out of. :) Let us know if you still have questions about this one..
