SC: Chap 7 In Action Prob #8

by steph Tue Sep 02, 2008 8:09 pm

Hi there,

the original problem reads, "Three times more students attended the prom this year than last year"
MGMAT's ans: "Three times more students attended the prom this year than did last year"
i revised the sentence as the following: "Three times as many students attended the prom this year than did last year."
i guess my question is, what is the difference between "times + more..." and "times + as....as"??? I am having a difficult time with number comparison.

Thank you very much in advance!

In this case those words would mean the same thing. Three times as many as = three times more than. The issue at stake in this problem is really more about the "did," which we use to clarify the meaning of the comparison. Your rephrasing is perfectly valid.
