Researchers of ThinkSoft

by shatabdo.kal Tue Apr 06, 2010 3:03 pm

Source : Online QB of free questions
Researchers of ThinkSoft say they will be able to make computers that can interpret native languages, and logically think as an expert does"”computers that will be used to diagnose equipment breakdowns, deciding whether to authorize a loan, or other purposes such as these.
(A) as an expert does"”computers that will be used to diagnose equipment breakdowns, deciding whether to authorize a loan, or other purposes such as these
(B) as an expert does, which may be used for purposes such as diagnosing equipment breakdowns or deciding whether to authorize a loan
(C) like an expert"”computers that will be used for such purposes as diagnosing equipment breakdowns or deciding whether to authorize a loan
(D) like an expert, the use of which would be for purposes like the diagnosis of equipment breakdowns or the decision whether or not a loan should be authorized
(E) like an expert, to be used to diagnose equipment breakdowns, deciding whether to authorize a loan or not, or the like

I've a query : why as is wrong here?
Is it not correct to write " Ken thinks logically as Sharon does " or the correct one is
Ken thinks like Sharon

IMO C,

"Like" cannot be used to introduce exapmles. It means Similar to, used to make comparisions.

Like Governs a Noun (Pronound or Nound Phrase)

"As" introduces a clause with a noun and a verb. In brief you can use As for "As+Subject+Verb

Computer can logically think as an expert can
or
Computer can logically think like an expert

Which one is correct??

As is required to compare the action and here we are going to compare the action i.e. thinking

I think that both "computer think as an expert does" and "computer think like an expert" both are correct. But the problem is with the rest of the part in each choice except C.

A -- "whether to authorize a loan, or other purposes" doesn't have parallel construction.

B-- you can throw out of the window since "which" is not pointing to any noun.. or "which" should follow a noun, so in this case "which" is following "does"

C -- correct.

D -- "the use of which" referring to what? is it referring to expert?

E-- modifier "to be used to diagnose equipment breakdowns" is modifying what? it is ambiguous and awkward.

My $0.02... hope that helps.

computers that will be used to diagnose equipment breakdowns, deciding whether to authorize a loan, or other purposes such as these

this part break the parallel construction

OA C

Ugendrr you are correct that is also my reasoning. Now I've still a problem to accept C is also correct. The theme of the sentence is Computer can think logically as an expert can , OK?
Now if we use like we can only compare with the noun like computer and the expert but here the comparison is going on between the way computer think and the way expert think. It is a clause demonstrating action.
Why I'm pondering so much because OG questions are limited and beyond this all of us need to look several other resources and some of them carries typical errors like this.
And to justify OA (here OA is C) we've to justify errors inside it and eventually confuses us.

Well..let me try one more :

As I have said :
Like : Governs a Noun (Prounoun/nooun phrase)
As : Intoduces a clause with a nound and a verb.

Now lets do it by some examples :

He speaks like a native speaker. Here notice that "A native speaker" is a noun phrase.

One more Exapmle : She looks like a supermodel.

Now lets solve As mystery.

Nobody sings as she does.
Now see : As She Does contains a Subject : She. and a verb : Does. This qualifies it for a Clause, and hence use of As is justified.

Thanks Ben and I've seen similar question in your GMAT forum , actually exactly similar. I think that particular online question changes a few words.
And here parallelism takes precedence over my logic, but still I'm not clear why like is correct
