Relative Pronoun - Who vs. Which

by rakesh.id Sun Sep 09, 2012 2:41 am

Which of the following sentences is correct?

1. Who of the two players will win the game?
2. Which of the two players will win the game?

It's clear to me that in case of an inanimate thing, which will be used. But I'm not sure which relative pronoun to use - who or which - in case of living beings? Or are both acceptable?

I think example 2 is not correct. In sentence 2 what is subject? "Which" so it doesn't make sense to me (though grammatically correct) to say -- Which will win the match?

BTW, i think we can use both "who" and "which" for living beings.

e.g.
I love a dog, which has a dark skin.
I love a girl, who sings good.
I Can. I Will.

Who refers to a person while which refers to a thing or group. In this case, we use which when referencing a limited set of things.

Who (out of anyone) won the game?
Which of the teams (out of the two teams) won the game?
Which player (out of the players) won the game?
