Regina returned the dress to the store, which was torn at on

by sauravsko Wed Jan 30, 2013 9:49 am

source:-Manhattan Gmat SC guide (modifiers)
Regina returned the dress to the store, which was torn at one of the seams.

Since 'which' in the sentence is not poining to the dress, the sentence was corrected by bringing the 'which clause' near to the dress.
Correct sentence according to guide:-
Regina returned the dress, which was torn at one of the seams,to the store.

But my doubt is that "which clause" should be changed as essential clause with "that" which is right now acting as non-essental. Elsewise , if we remove the non-essential clause then the corrected sentence will not make any sense with the reason for returning.

We must restrict it by saying that:-
Regina returned the dress that was torn at one of the seams,to the store.

Anyone please clearify....

Thanks is advance.

Sanjay
