Re -taking practice tests on the website

by pia_nag Sun Aug 30, 2009 7:34 am

Hello ,

I have been planning to take the gmat for a while now.
Last year around this time I purchased the 6 online tests on this website for USD 39. At the time , I rushed through the tests :gettin sub-standard scores in the range of 580-600 and not paying much attention to the analysis of the results.

Its been a year and now I have registered for the GMAT one month from today.
Is it possible for me to re-take the tests already taken?
I would ideally like to paractice atleast 6 CATs before the real deal.
I doubt I would remember any of the questions from a year back!

Do let me know.

Hi Pia-

You actually have access to those CAT exams until 9/14. The access will expire then, but if you get additional access, you'll be able to use those tests again.

Thankyou Briehan for your response.

How do I apply for additional access? Does it cost me anything?
My GMAT date is 04 october and I would ideally like to have practice tests available.
Is the question bank the same once I reset the exams?

Also, how closely does your CAT test results provided by Manhattan GMAT mirror the actual GMAT score? Are we to expect round about the same range as what we score on these tests as on the original final test , or should we expecy higher/ lower?

For details on extending your access, contact the office at studentservices@manhattangmat.com or 800.576.GMAT.

The question banks are generally the same, yes, although some questions have been added, some have been edited, and some have been deleted in the past year. The standard deviation on our test is about 50 points; generally speaking, that means that most people score within about 50 points of their last practice test score on the real test. You can increase the accuracy of the test results by ensuring that you take the tests under officially timed testing conditions (including the essays - stamina is a factor!), and by taking the tests at the same time of day as you plan to take the real test.

One word of caution: CAT exams are really good for (a) figuring out where you're scoring right now, (b) practicing stamina, and (c) analyzing your strengths and weaknesses. The actual act of just taking the exam, however, is NOT so useful for improving. It's what you do with the test results / between tests that helps you to improve.

It's almost never a good idea to take a test more frequently than once a week. You're really just using the practice tests to figure out what you need to improve before you take another practice test - so most of your work should be out of whatever books or other materials you've gotten that teach you (a) the material you need to know for the test, and (b) how to take the test (the best techniques for answering different kinds of questions).
