This is not a case of anything being "true or not", as you mention in your first post. Neither is wrong; it's just that the GMAT tends not to use plural possessives, so IF YOU HAVE TO GUESS that will help you increase the odds. The main thing to keep in mind is that the ONLY mistake anyone EVER makes on SC is eliminating the correct answer. For this reason you don't EVER want to guess unless you have absolutely nothing else to go on. If you see either one of these constructions on the GMAT, leave it in!
