RC main point

by shivani_magan Sun Mar 18, 2012 9:14 am

Hello instructors ,
I had a question about RC main point of the passage question . What I have observed is that the main point answer choices are generally abstract . Is this most of the time true ?
I ask this question because by the time I reach the 4 RC in my CAT exams , i am always short on time . So if i am ever down to two choices in which one is concrete and other one is abstract , then instead on wasting more time on it , can i choose an the abstract answer choice and move on .

The below example is from MGMAT CAT# 1.

The primary purpose of the passage is best expressed in which of the following ways?
The author presents the data set that proved that the Moon was once part of the Earth.
The author discusses the data sets that changed scientists' opinions about the relative sizes of the Earth's and the Moon's cores.
The passage analyzes the assumptions about radii and core mass that led to important implications about the origin of the planets.
The passage examines the use of scientific methods to analyze data and confirm a hypothesis, while referencing possible deductions.
The passage elucidates the implications following from the size of the Earth's core.

I narrowed it down to answer choice A and D. Because D is more abstract than A( the passage is about earth's core and moon's core) . Then as a backup method when i short on time , can i choose D and move on .

I hope I make some sense . Please let me know your views.

Please make sure to read (and follow!) forum guidelines before posting. This question should go in the ManhattanGMAT Verbal Strategy Guides folder (because it is a strategy for a verbal question).

I'll answer this time because the answer is short but next time I'll make you go post in the right folder. :)

Yes, you're right! The correct answers are often pretty abstract and "middle of the road" for RC main idea. If you have to guess, that's a good way to guess.

You mention timing issues. If you haven't already read this, do so:
