rather than vs instead of

Many time we encounter questions using 'rather than' and 'instead of'. Can someone explain where to use 'rather than' and where to use 'instead of'

Thanks

Type 'rather' and 'instead' into the search box on the upper right and you'll find this.

Knowledge of the difference between " rather than" and "instead of " is very important for GMAT Verbal. To one of my doubt Christian Ryan gave a good explanation.

Hmm.

This is a point into which we'll do some further research, for sure.

Have you encountered any examples of problems on which 'rather than'/'instead of' is the DECIDING FACTOR (i.e., there was at least one answer choice differing from the correct choice ONLY in this respect)? If so, tell us!
