Questions on Idioms and general grammar

by gmatwork Fri Aug 19, 2011 3:21 pm

1) Usage of Idiom "After" -

After the gold rush, the mining town collapsed. - right
Following the gold rush, the mining town collapsed - suspect

What is the problem with second sentence?

2) If two parts of the sentence are parallel, connected by a parallel marker "and"e.g ........... and .........

do the individual parts need to have the same tense as well? I have seen SC problem where tense was different for the two parts of the sentence connected by a parallel marker.

1) Following implies "directly following" . . . the collapse could have happened a while after the gold rush.

2) They do not have to have the same tense. Check out #42 in the Official Guide Sentence Correction section for a good example of this.
