As a general rule, the General material should be done first, and you should not move to any particular category of Advanced material until you feel comfortable with the corresponding General material. Because much of the Advanced material builds on the General material, it's typically not worth your time to try the Advanced material until you are actually ready to handle it.
In terms of whether the Advanced material is "nice to have" or "imperative," that all depends upon your eventual goal. If your eventual goal is a 750, all of the material is imperative. If your eventual goal is a 700, you will need to master some of the Advanced material. if your eventual goal is a 650, you can get away with mastering the General material plus a bit of the Advanced material in your areas of greatest strength. And so on.
