pronoun refers to different things

by MichaelZ337 Tue Jun 23, 2015 7:43 am

Dear Instructor

In OG2016 - SC 132, I chose B but the OA is E. I am confused about the two "theirs" in E: clearly, one refers to clones and the other refers to members of cheetah species. I remember that the same pronoun cannot refer to two different things in a sentence??

Thanks

this forum is not the place for OG problems.

technically, of course, only the text of the problems themselves is banned here—but we also won't let this folder devolve into 'let's just discuss all the OG problems without quoting them'.

just this once, though, i'll address the question: in that example, the two pronouns stand for exactly the same thing.

hint:
if i say that "X is almost like chocolate in its sweet taste", then, even without any additional context, we know that X (= 'it') is definitely NOT chocolate. (no one would write 'chocolate is almost like chocolate', unless going for some poetic effect.)
