pronoun problem

by manhhiep2509 Tue Jan 07, 2014 4:55 am

Hello.

The below sentence is similar to question 83 in verbal review 2.

"the companies replace living allowance with paychecks of their employees, for those of them assigned to other companies."

Please explain what is wrong with "for those of them".

Thank you.

* You'd just write "those".

* I'm assuming that you only mean to refer to employees assigned to other companies, not to all employees. (It's hard to tell, as this sentence is basically nonsense, and I don't have the verbal supplement at hand.)
If that's the case, then this sentence incorrectly implies that your' talking about the paychecks of all employees. (When a modifier is enclosed within commas, it doesn't narrow the previous noun; if it's removed, you're talking about the same noun.)
