Is it exactly half, or at least half?

Exact 5 out of 10 are Boys

by Saurav Wed Oct 22, 2008 2:55 pm

50 Students = 25 (boys) + 25 (girls)

Select 10 students = 5 boys + 5 girls

Select 5 boys from 25 boys in 25 C 5 = 25! / 5! ways
Select 5 girls from 25 girls in 25 C 5 = 25! / 5! ways

Total number of ways to select 10 students from 50 students = 50 C 10 = 50! / 10!

Required Probability = (25! / 5! x 25! / 5!) / 50! / 10!

Since the order does not matter, the solution will be -

A = 25! /( 5! * 20!) - ways to choose 5 out of 25 boys
B = 25! /(5! * 20!) - ways to choose 5 out of 25 girls

ways to choose 10 people out of 50

C = 50!/ (10! * 40!)

Final Answer = (A*B)/C

Please remember to read (and follow!) the forum guidelines. I just deleted the problem because the poster did not cite the source. Teachers cannot answer questions unless the source is cited in the General Math and General Verbal folders. Further, administrators will delete the question if the source is not cited. Thanks!
