what is the appropriate number of private tutoring hours for someone who has not studied for the GMAT and is interested in applying to business school in a few months?

Can't answer that question without additional information. What is your current scoring level? What is your goal score? Obviously, how much you study depends on how far you currently are from your goal score.

If you haven't already, sign up for a free practice test (go to the "store" area of the web site and "buy" a free practice test - the price is $0.00). Take it under exact testing conditions (essays, 10 min break, quant, 10 min break, verbal) and see what your score is. If you haven't already, research the average scores at the schools to which you're planning to apply. See how they compare, and come back and let us know.

Good luck!
