Private Tutoring - How Helpful?

by mvamsee Tue Feb 07, 2012 2:31 am

Hi,
I wanted to get some feedback from my peers and Manhattan instructors on Private tutoring and how helpful it would be for me. I have been preparing for GMATs for over a year and have taken the official exam twice. Both the times my scores were below par. I did take a Manhattan instructor led class in Feb of last year and also a Knewton course recently (for some change in perspective as I am frustrated due to lack of progress). I am considering to explore the private tutoring option, hoping my instructor could analyse my study patters and suggest a plan.
So I am hoping to hear back from people who have taken private tutoring and how helpful it was. Any advice from my peers and instructors would be very much appreciated.
And also, Hope Manhattan has private tutoring option in the Washington DC area :)

Thank You,

Hi - in terms of getting advice from your peers (which is a great idea!), you may want to post in or browse through the Instructor Feedback section. People may answer you here too (and I hope they do!) but this folder is primarily designed for instructors to address student questions, so other students may not answer you here.

I won't tell you whether to do tutoring (because I have an obvious conflict of interest!) but I can tell you some things to think about in making that decision for yourself.

Before I do, though, you mentioned that you took our course last year. Did you take the real test? If so, you can sign up for something called a Post-Exam Assessment. It's a free service for our students who have taken the real test and aren't happy with their score. You'd be paired up with an instructor to debrief from the first test and figure out a plan to move forward. (Note: you do have to have taken the real test in order to take advantage of this.)

Now, in terms of deciding whether to use a tutor, read this:

Also, you may want to take a look at this article; I think it'll be helpful regardless of whether you end up working on your own, taking a class, or finding a tutor:

Finally, if you want to continue to get advice here in the forums, please make use of us. I'll suggest that you analyze your most recent MGMAT CAT using this article and then tell us your analysis:

Finally, yes, we do offer private tutoring in DC. :)
