Prepping for GMAT Re-take: Need to Improve Quant Score

by sharonjaynelee Mon Jan 03, 2011 12:23 pm

I am a Manhattan GMAT alumna and took the GMAT last week. I scored a 690 (44Q, 40V), which puts me in the 88th percentile overall. For that, I thank you. I felt well-prepared for the exam and knew that I would get a strong score.

I would like to retake the exam, mainly because my quant score was lower than I would have liked (68th percentile) and most of the EMBA/MBA programs that I am considering want to see quant ranges in the 80th percentile or higher. My target programs are: HBS, Columbia EMBA and NYU Stern EMBA.

Do you have any advice on how I can improve my quant score? I've been using the strategy guides, the OG and Quant Review 2 and practice exams on the Manhattan GMAT and GMAT Prep software. What else can I do to improve my quant ability? Would you recommend that I register for one of Manhattan GMAT's advanced, online workshops?

I need a strategy for success and specific resources that will help to strengthen the areas in which I am weak. Would love your thoughts on how to tackle this challenge.

Thanks in advance for your help and advice.

First, if you haven't already, contact the office (studentservices@manhattangmat.com or 800.576.GMAT) and ask for a post-exam assessment. This is free to all course students and certain self-study and tutoring students (depending upon the program). You'll be matched up with an instructor to debrief from your official test and figure out what to do next.

I can also advise you, but you'll get better advice through the PEA process, because that instructor will take a look at your practice tests, etc. So go do that first and then, if you have additional questions or want to discuss further anything that you discussed during the PEA, come on back here and let me know. :)

Also, after you've had your PEA, you can come back here to let me know generally what you discussed, and I can point you toward additional resources that will help with the specific issues you uncovered.

You can also use the below article to do an analysis of your most recent MGMAT CAT (assuming it was taken under official or almost-official conditions):

You can share that analysis here and we'll help you figure out what to do about things!

Thanks so much, Stacey! I wasn't aware of the post-exam assessment. I'll call the office in the morning and will report back after I meet with an instructor.
