Question approach

by evv89 Mon Jul 11, 2011 4:12 am

Hi everyone!
Just wanted to ask how do you approach quant questions? By this I mean, do you solve while reading? Do you assign variables straight away while reading or do you read first then assign and solve?
I would appreciate if you could give any insight about this.

Thank you

In my experience working with many different students, people do different things. A decently large part of all of this is based upon your own style and what works best for you.

In general, here are some principles to follow for quant:
- write EVERYthing down; you don't want to write the entire question down word-for-word, but you need to figure out how you're going to write down all of the different pieces of information given to you in the problem
- don't solve in your head; solve on paper
- when first reading the problem, your first focus is on how to write down the various pieces of information; you may read the whole thing and then go back and write, or you may write piece by piece as you read it (up to you)
- after you've got the information on your scrap paper, now you can try to figure out how to put it all together (that is, how to solve!)
