Re: GMAT Prep Verbal - SEntence Correction

by YIJUNGL428 Sun Jul 30, 2017 3:19 pm

hi instructors,
I don't understand in C,D

C. because it is so genetically similar, the ant considers all its fellows to be close relatives and thus does not engage in the kind of fierce intercolony struggles that limits
D. because they are so genetically similar to one another, the ants consider all their fellows to be close relatives and thus do not engage in the kind of fierce intercolony struggles that limit

I thought "the kind of " should be singular, therefore we should use "limits".
Does the verb be singular or plural depends on "the kind of+ N or Ns?

Thank you very much.

This is a tricky issue, and it depends on the situation. First of all, remember that the phrase "that ...." is a noun modifier. Here we have to decide if it's modifying struggles, or kind. (You're right: if it was modifying kind then it would be limits.)

Take these (correct) examples to help you. What's the noun being modified in each case?

The bowl of apples that is on the table is heavy.
The bowl of apples that taste delicious is heavy.

In the case of the Argentine ant problem, think of the meaning of the sentence to help you. Since it is the struggles that do the limiting, we need limit, not limits.

Thanks a lot, pretty clear explanation. :)

Can you please explain this question with regard to the use of "because of" and "due to" in each of the options.

How to eliminate the options on the basis of their usage?

Thank you

Hi Ron,
the link is dead.

Can you post it again?

I am interested in the difference between "because" and "due to"

Thanks
