Here is the other essay:
Analysis of an issue:
"Employees always perform better when given a say in determining the boundaries of their roles within a company."
Many people believe that employees always perform better when they are given a say in determining the boundaries of their roles within a company. Unfortunately this is not entirely true. People should realize that an employees role and its boundaries might vary between different industries or even between different companies. In this discussion I shall present examples and argue against an employee's say in determining the boundaries of his roles.
Firstly, Different companies have different requirements. The nature, requirements and challenges of a particular line of business in an organization will be best understood by the employer. For example, a technical lead's role in some service based software organizations require the person to lead and deliver projects by delegation. On the other hand, product development companies such as Oracle require the technical lead to be an individual contributor and actually write lines of code. Though both industries are the same, with the same roles, the nature of the job itself differs.
Secondly, individual traits differ from one person to another. It would not be right if two people in the same organization at the same level chose different boundaries. For example, a person with a high morale may opt to increase his boundaries to a significant level, whereas a person with a more complacent attitude might opt for convenience. While each person definitely has the right to choose what he/she wants, it would not be fair from an organizational point of view where the employer expects that both employees perform the same way.
Thirdly, workplace politics might be a direct result of letting employees determine the boundaries of their roles. For instance a person who tows the line to actually make an impact might eventually be rewarded more than the person who opts for a more convenient work life. This would definitely not work well for a team in any organization, since the organization agrees with an employee when he/she determines the boundaries of their roles, but eventually only rewards the person who has chosen to actually work harder. This would work much better if the organization sets expectations for employees.
Therefore in order to increase productivity, maintain or improve employee morale and maintain fairness at the workplace it will always be better to let the employer set expectations and boundaries for any role that an employee works in. An employee determining his/her boundaries for their roles will only result in an unsynchronized workplace where some work less and some work more.
