Passive voice

by JbhB682 Thu Apr 29, 2021 9:04 am

Hi - I was curious, how does one change the active voice into the passive voice when using different command subjunctives.

Are my re-constructions correct ?

example # 1
Active voice : It is necessary that Sam answer these questions at once
Passive voice : It is necessary that these questions be answered by Sam at once

example # 2
Active voice : We forbid Sam to leave
Passive voice : We forbid Sam to be leaving

example # 3
Active voice : We require Sam to wear the hat
Passive voice : We require the hat be worn by Sam

Both of the sentences in example #1 are correct.

I think this one isn't command subjunctive (it has no "that" after the bossy verb, and the infinitive still has the "to" on it.). The strategy guide refers to this as "Bossy + infinitive" (p. 503). I think your active voice example is correct, but the passive voice example isn't, mainly because I don't see how the meaning is different in such a way as to justify the passive voice. If it means the same, you'd just use the (shorter, more direct) active voice.

The only change I'd make here is to put a "that" in the passive voice example: We require THAT the hat be worn by Sam.
