Passive voice clause + Comma + Verb-ing modifier

by supratim7 Wed Jan 01, 2014 3:57 pm

A general question regarding "comma + Verb-ing modifiers".

Scientists have analyzed latest environmental data, reporting that the Earth's climate has become two degrees warmer since 1960 -- This (Active voice clause + comma + Verb-ing modifier) of course is fine.

Latest environmental data have been analyzed by scientists, reporting that the Earth's climate has become two degrees warmer since 1960. -- Would this (Passive voice clause + comma + Verb-ing modifier) be fine too?

I do understand that passive voice per se is not preferred in GMAT; just trying to understand whether "Passive voice clause + comma + Verb-ing modifier" be OK in certain situations or it is totally incorrect.

Thank you so much

Remember that, in the construction (complete sentence) + , + __ing..., the "__ing" modifier describes the subject and action of the "complete sentence" part.

E.g.,
I dropped the groceries onto the floor, scaring the baby.
--> "Scaring the baby" describes my act of dropping the groceries. In other words, I (not the groceries) am ultimately responsible for scaring the baby, via my action of dropping the groceries. No blame is placed on the groceries themselves.

Latest environmental data have been analyzed by scientists, reporting

This is nonsense, because data can't report things.

Where did you get this question?
"Latest environmental data" MUST be preceded by "the". This isn't something that the GMAT tests, but, if your source is missing "the", that means it's a bad source.

Verbs are verbs; if the sentence makes sense, it makes sense. Don't complicate the issue. (Grammatical issues are NEVER affected by the tense or voice of verbs; from a strictly grammatical standpoint, all verbs are essentially identical. Only meaning/context is affected by those things.)

E.g.,
Sasha was hit by a car, suffering three compound fractures.
Perfectly respectable sentence.

Correct.
The latest environmental data have been analyzed by scientists, reporting that the Earth's climate has become two degrees warmer. Incorrect

I think, I understand your point.
Thank you so much for the reply :)
