Parallelism

by allfta Wed Feb 12, 2014 10:38 pm

Hi guys.
I am wondering 'action' and 'state' verbs of a same subject can be used in a sentence. (Of course in terms of SC part only)

Please check my reasoning below ;

1.
Physicians are unsure about A, and there is ~
: Fine. no problem.
2.
Physicians are unsure about A and play with a ball
: awkward. Since it compares state and action of the single subject.

3.
Physicians are unsure about A, and they play with a ball
:Fine with the S-V issue and cant say it is redundant by using same subject twice.

Thank you always!

Sure, as long as that's the intention.

E.g., If you are at least 16 years old and have completed a CPR certification course, you may apply for a job as a lifeguard.

Pretty much any verb can be parallel to pretty much any other verb. There's no sense in trying to impose "restrictions" that don't actually exist; just use common sense to decide whether parallelism makes sense.
