Overlapping Sets

by naveenhv Fri May 06, 2011 1:37 pm

Of the 200 members of a certain association, each member who speaks German also speaks English, and 70 of the members speak only Spanish. If no member speaks
all three languages, how many of the members speak two of the three languages?

1) 60 of the members speak only English

2) 20 of the members do not speak any of the three languages.

only 5 cases exist:

1. Eng + Spanish
2. Eng + German
3. Only Eng
4. Only Spanish
5. Those who do not speak any language

We need to find sum of 1 and 2.

3. is given in option a), 4. is given in question, 5 is given in option b)

So answer is C .

If we actually solve the problem, yes, that looks right to me.

the question said that no member speaks all three languages. plus, those who speak german also speak english. so there is no overlapping of german and spanish. so, spanish+german=0.
