Overall G Strategy!

by wahid.hasan15 Mon Aug 27, 2012 8:10 am

Hi,

I am new to Manhattan GMAT forum. I'm preparing for GMAT exam. I have only 1.5 months to prepare myself. I am currently aiming for scores ranging from 680 to 720. I need some answers to my questions.

I have completed Guide 1, 2, 3, And Geometry. But I didn’t finish the Word Translations guide. But I will finish it. It is mentionable that I didn’t do any data sufficiency questions. My sole target is right now is PS questions.

My questions regarding quant section are:

1. Do I need to do advance chapters from all the guides?

2. I have gone through couple of questions from OG 12. I'm keeping an error log. Majority of the problems I found regarding time pressure and sill mistakes. My accuracy level is 60% (Assuming I have mixed up easy, medium and hard questions) is it considered as good standing? My target is to achieve 48-49 in quant. If I finish all the quant guides from Manhattan assuming not doing advance chapters is it possible for me to achieve that score?

My next question regarding Verbal is:

1. I have finished all the relevant chapters for critical reasoning. And in OG 12 so far I have maintained 60% accuracy in the first 60 CR questions. Is it considered as good standing? My target is to achieve at least 40 in verbal. I personally think I’m not performing well. Any strategy to pull up my verbal scores?

Thank you.

What is your current scoring level? If you have not yet taken a practice test, please do so ASAP. Take the test under 100% official conditions (including essay and IR); use an MGMAT CAT for this.

That will give you an idea of how far you have to go to get to your goal. This is also my answer to your question about whether your OG performance is good: it really tells us very little. We need to know your performance on a practice CAT taken under official conditions. Those results will also help you to have an idea as to whether 6 weeks is likely to be enough time (most people need more time).

Use the below to analyze your most recent MGMAT CAT(s) or the one you're about to take:

Then come back here and tell us the results of your analysis and what you think you should do based on that analysis. (Note: do share an analysis with us, not just the raw data. Part of getting better is developing your ability to analyze your results - figure out what they mean and what you think you should do about them!)

Your quant goal is 48 to 49, which is 78th to 83rd percentile. At that level, no, you do not need to do all of the advanced chapter material, though you may do some of it eventually. Your first focus should be all of the general chapters. Later, after you've mastered the general material, you may also decide to look at some of the advanced material in your areas of strength.

Next, you should look at this new 2-part article, Developing a Study Plan. Note that the below link is to the first half. You can find the link to the second half of the article at the end of the first half.
