"ones" vs "those": Random question

by harpreet1205 Thu Dec 26, 2013 9:10 am

Hi Ron,

If there are two constructions

Jan Micker’s 1652 masterwork Bird’s Eye View of Amsterdam features spatial relationships that are more subtle and intricate than those in most other seventeenth-century Dutch paintings.

Jan Micker’s 1652 masterwork Bird’s Eye View of Amsterdam features spatial relationships that are more subtle and intricate than the ones in most other seventeenth-century Dutch paintings.

In the above two constructions the only difference is the underlined portion. Are both the constructions grammatically correct or just the first one is correct and why?

source: Manhattan practice exams.
Though the original options doesn't actually show up the same sentences but wanted to know whether I could eliminate an option on the basis of above difference.

Thanks in advance.

They're both fine.

"Those" (or the corresponding singular "that") is generally considered more elegant, so you're not going to see "the one(s)" unless there's a good reason NOT to use "that" or "those".

E.g.,
James's new car is bigger than the one that he sold.
--> Here, try replacing "the one" with "that" and see what happens. (Not good.)

You won't be faced with a decision, since either one is correct (and the GMAT doesn't test style issues).
