One week to go - three MGMAT CATs left

by victor2007 Mon Sep 21, 2009 8:53 am

Hey there,

first of all let me express my gratitude to all the great MGMAT staff. Your books and your CATs so far have greatly contributed to my preparation.

I have one week to go and I just completed GMAT Prep 2 with a Score of 690 (42/42), which is absolutely brilliant, as I only need 600 points. So the question is, how to conserve this performance? I am really confident right now and maybe another CAT under real-life conditions (i.e. timed) would just reduce that confidence. However, I have three MGMAT CATs left and thought about doing them in an untimed way - just to practice.

Is this a good idea in your opinion?

Background info: so far I have studied for the last 7 weeks.
My CAT history: GMAT Prep 1 (early August) 580, Gmat Prep 2 (mid August) 540, MGMAT 1 580, MGMAT 2 540, MGMAT 3 640, GMAT Prep 1 (last week) 600, GMAT Prep 2 (today) 690.

Thanks, bye!

That is great! You should definitely have a lot of confidence with that performance.

So, I advise my students to take the final practice test 1 week before the real test. In my opinion, you're done (as far as practice tests are concerned). Ride that wave. :)

Now, what to do in this final week? First, review that test. Ask yourself:
1) what did I like about the way I did this / what do I want to repeat on Test Day?
2) what didn't I like about the way I did this / what do I want to do differently on Test Day?
3) what are the priorities on the things I want to do differently? I may not have time to get to everything, so where should I start?
4) how am I going to learn / solidify the things I want to do differently? (starting with the most important thing and doing what I can, but recognizing that I may not get through everything in a week)

Also, do some general review. What are your major pacing strategies? How are you going to know whether you're on time, or ahead or behind? What are you going to do if you find yourself going too quickly or slowly?

What are your major strategies for answering the different types of questions? What are your strategies for making educated guesses? (And don't forget a general review of the major pieces math and grammar content.)

As you get closer to the test date, do less each day. The day before, 2 hours max. You're a highly-trained athlete gearing up for the big game: you rest beforehand. You don't tire yourself out the day before.

Good luck! Let us know how it goes!

Awesome. I needed 600 for my MSc programme and ended up with 660 (42/40). Entered the 89% percentil in Verbal, nice.

7 weeks ago I didn't even know how to divide decimals, lol. MGMAT math rocks! However, I found MGMAT CATs to be inaccurate when it comes to Verbal.

Altough I came off to a bumpy start in Quant, where I couldn't figure out the first question. Additionally Geometry seemed pretty tough compared to GMAT Prep.

Thanks to MGMAT! Hope you guys achieve your dream scores, too.
