OMITTED WORDS

by er_singhabhishek Tue Feb 28, 2012 12:27 pm

Hi,

My doubt is related to OMITTED WORDS.

Here is a sentence from Manhattan SC:
My car is bigger than Brian's [car].
(Here car can be omitted because Possessive Noun can be omitted in the second part of comparison.)

Similar question in OG (12th Edition): Q93
(Question is not mentioned due to copy-write issue.)
Option (E) is wrong - The reason given is that the possessive last year’s does not parallel the adverbial phrase this year.

I have understood the OG question and the reason why option (A) is the correct choice.

My questions are -
1.. Is it necessary to make two sides of THAN parallel. (can't one be possessive noun and other adverbial, as in this case?)
2.. If at all we have to make them parallel then how sentence given above from Manhattan SC, correct? (one side of THAN is adjective (bigger) and the other side is possessive noun (Brian's))

Please help me understand where I am going wrong in my understanding of OMITTED WORDS.

Thanks!!!
Abhishek

1. Yes. "than" is a comparison marker, and what shows up on both sides must be parallel..

2. We are not comparing "bigger" to "Brian's [car]"; we are comparing "my car" to "Brian's [car]"..
