OG and QR quant questions

by park.jen Thu Sep 16, 2010 9:24 am

hello -

last week!!! i'm somewhat relieved, as i've begun to feel a little tapped out in terms of practice. i still have room for improvement, but realistically, i probably won't see big miracles in change in skill.

however, i wanted to know whether people should be worried if they're not getting all practice problems from the OG or QR right. i've been doing splits (5 DS and 5 PS) timed. sometimes i am able to whiz through the questions; sometimes i hit tougher questions. on these tougher questions, should i be skipping them like i would on a timed exam? usually, i go back and try to learn what threw me off. but i'm not sure whether i'm supposed to practice skipping when doing these splits.

also, in the last week, to improve my strategy on timing, i was going to practice with gmat focus material...i also have one last CAT exam to take...does this sound too overwhelming?

any insights would help.

thank you

When you're practicing under timed conditions, you should pretend it's the test, yes - make guesses as you need to, decide when to stop and guess, etc. Those are all actual skills that you need to learn, too!

Then, when you review the questions, spend all the time you need to learn how to get better. Review things in your books or other lessons, try the problem multiple ways, read the explanation, ask about it during class or office hours (or the forums), etc.

So, when "doing" - do it as though it's the real test. When reviewing, spend all the time you need.

You only have a couple of days left (for future notice: it often takes 3 to 5 business days to get a response on the forums), so at this point, you should mostly be relaxing. Don't take a practice test within 5 days of the real thing, and the closer you get, the more you do just high level review and clear your brain. Go see a movie the night before (or rent a movie and cozy up at home).

Good luck!

For others reading this, here are two articles that talk about what to do for the final 2 weeks:
