Number of Questions per Reading Comprehension Passage

by sri_cruiser2k Mon Feb 14, 2011 3:33 am

Dear MGMAT Instructor,

Knowing the number of questions to expect per passage is helpful; accordingly the authors of the MGMAT Reading Comprehension guide help by mentioning that the approximate number of questions per short passage is 3 and per long passage is 4. However, in previously tested passages available in the Official GMAT Guide, I'm seeing many passages - even short ones - having as many as 7 questions (since we're not allowed to discuss specific problems from the OG, I can't point out specific passages).

Could you kindly explain the discrepancy above? If MGMAT's estimate has changed on the approximate number of questions to expect per passage, kindly let me know it; also, does the timing guideline proposed by MGMAT (2 to 4 minutes reading the passage, 60 to 75 seconds per question) change? For instance, using the MGMAT guideline, a 7-question short passage would take 10 minutes.

I apologize for this long winded post and my confusion. I would really appreciate your advice at your convenience.

Thank you for your time and efforts.
Regards,
Sri

the reason the OG has more questions per passage is because they write questions at several different difficulty levels. the computer will then choose 3 or 4 for you based on your performance so far on the test..
