Noun pronoun check

by asth678 Sat Dec 22, 2012 3:29 pm

I was going through the GMAT fundamental verbal book and am going through each drill trying to identify verbs nouns pronouns.in drill 2.2 I had the following as
-it is clear to everyone that chairman frankel will have to resign his position
Q- Is resign a noun or a verb in this sentence? Also I marked position as a noun-is that correct?

-if one wants to drive over Rugged terrain one will ned. Vehicle far more powerful than mine
I think powerful is a noun cause it describes a quality but wanted to double check if I am thinking about this correctly?

-everybody at the comics conventions is hoping for a chance to get an autograph from each of their celebrities.
Here hoping is a verb cause its a action but I am not sure if chance acts as a noun or a verb-how should I think about it...it's similar to the question I had about the word powerful-is there a certain way I should be thinking about such words?

-who just saw me spill soup all over myself
In this qs why is me a pronoun-shouldn't it be a noun as its the main person in this sentence? It's the main action doer in this sentence..

Thank you and happy holidays!

it looks like you probably need to spend a little more time in the foundations of verbal book reviewing the definitions of parts of speech and how to recognize them..

resign is a verb. it is something you can do. you can resign.

position is a noun. it is a thing. you can have a position.

powerful is not a noun. it is not a thing, you cannot have a powerful (what would a powerful look like?). because powerful describes a quality that makes it an adjective.

technically the verb here would be "is hoping" rather than "hoping", but you have the right idea. chance is a noun because you can have a chance (notice how there is an "a" in front of chance - that's a good indication you have a noun).

all pronouns are nouns. just like all squares are quadrilaterals.
