Notetaking on Study Guides

by rajzillany Mon Jun 09, 2014 7:40 pm

Question for those of you reviewing the MGMAT Guides
I tend to highlight a key points but the truth is, over 9 guides, there is so much material and many tips to cover, I find myself not remembering all the strategies I can use, or what was written.

To remember as I am going through each guide, I was considering taking notes but wanted to get your opinion first.

Does taking notes on the guides while studying actually help you retain what you have read, and have you actually used the notes you took after completing the guides?

I generally am a creature of habit/practice so I don't know if note taking would be the right way to study, or just review the end of chapter questions.
Thanks

I'd love to hear what other students have to say. I think different things work for different people.

You're right that there is so much material across all of the guides - I'd think of it as creating a "cheat sheet" for each guide. What is the most important stuff that you're learning as you go through? Pull that out into your own notes - not in the book, but in a separate notebook.

At the end of the week, go through and shorten / simplify the notes (from that week) even further. You'll realize that you know certain things now and don't need them on your cheat sheet. Other things you'll realize are too detailed or nitpicky, not big-picture. By the time you're done, you should have just a few pages of the most important things to remember.

Also, studies have been done showing that people retain material better when they hand-write the notes (not type) - keep that in mind.
