Not able to improve my 650 barrier

by isha.v.20 Fri Jun 17, 2016 11:51 pm

Hi this is Isha. I have enrolled myself for Manhattan Gmatprep Interact lesson.
Hi have completed all my Manhattan guides, OG problems, and Critical Reasoning Bible .
My weakness is time management in Quant section. I dont have timing issues in Verbal section.
However, I am not able to improve my score either in quant or in verbal.
I really need help. I am planning to take GMAt in July end. Below are my cat scores.

Manhattan CAT1 : Q(46) V(33) : 650
Manhattan CAT2: Q(48) V(32) : 650
Manhattan CAT3: Q(39) V(34) : 600
Manhattan CAT4: Q(45) V(35): 660
Manhattan CAT5: Q(42) V(32) : 600
GMAT Prep Test1: Q(49) V(38) :710

I am aiming for 710+. Please help me how to improve my verbal and quant scores. Its really frustrating to see my scores not improve inspite of all the efforts.

Thanks
Isha

When did you take the GMATPrep test? Why do you think that that one was so much higher than the others? What felt different about it?

Okay, we're going to do some in-depth analysis to figure out what's going wrong.

First, read these two articles:
http://tinyurl.com/executivereasoning
http://tinyurl.com/2ndlevelofgmat

Think about how what you've been doing does and doesn't match up with that and how you may need to change your approach accordingly. Write down your thoughts.

Then, take a look at these:
https://www.manhattanprep.com/gmat/blog ... -the-gmat/
Read this one through section 4:
http://tinyurl.com/GMATTimeManagement

You may also want to re-watch the Timing Strategies Lab (session 6 of Interact).

Again, think about how the strategies you've been using to manage your time do and don't match up with the above (and tell me what you think).

Finally, use the below to analyze your most recent MPrep CATs (this should take you a minimum of 1 hour):
http://tinyurl.com/analyzeyourcats

Based on all of that, figure out your strengths and weaknesses as well as any ideas you have for what you think you should do. Then come back here and tell us; we'll tell you whether we agree and advise you further. (Note: do share an analysis with us, not just the raw data. Your analysis should include a discussion of your buckets - you'll understand what that means when you read the last article. Part of getting better is developing your ability to analyze your results - figure out what they mean and what you think you should do about them!)

I have been facing the same problem.

My scores are:

CAT 1 - 610
CAT 2 - 630
CAT 3 - 640
CAT 4 - 640
CAT 5 - 630

Yet to take CAT 6 and GMATPrep.

Though the scores vary slightly, what I find most frustrating is that in all the mocks I got approximately 15-16 questions wrong both in verbal and in quantitative.

Preparation wise I have completed Manhattan Guides, OGs etc cover to cover.

I have developed a few strategies to ensure I do not get more than 2 questions wrong consecutively but I am still unable to implement those steadily.

Topic wise - I have brought down error in SC to two per exam but in RC and CR I lack consistency. In quantitative, my score is varying between 43-49.

My exam is in mid-July and my target is a 680+ score.

Thanks @Stacey for your reply to Isha's question. Hopefully it will benefit us.

Thanks for your comment, SinchanP299. If you want to discuss your case in particular, please start your own thread with your information. (I can't "mix" cases in one thread or I will mix up the details of the two students!)

what I find most frustrating is that in all the mocks I got approximately 15-16 questions wrong both in verbal and in quantitative.

This indicates to me that you don't yet understand how the scoring works on the GMAT. This will always be the case (at nearly any scoring level - it only changes a bit at VERY high and VERY low scoring levels). This is how the test works in the first place.

It's important to learn more about that so that you know how you need to approach this test. Watch the Prepare to Face the GMAT strategy lesson in session 1 of our Interact lessons in your student center. (Everyone has access to this—we make it available for free.)

I have developed a few strategies to ensure I do not get more than 2 questions wrong consecutively
It is impossible to ensure this. If I give you two questions that you cannot do, you cannot do them no matter what. There's no strategy you can use to suddenly make yourself be able to do something that you didn't know how to do a minute ago. So don't focus on this any longer.

As I mentioned, if you'd like to discuss your specific case further, please do start your own thread. :)
