Next Generation GMAT

by smarksum Mon Jul 12, 2010 3:05 pm

Anyone have any thoughts on this test. Any clue when test prep will be available for the Integrated Reasoning section? I will probably go to B School in 2013 and am wondering if I should wait to take the test until 2012.

Any ideas would help

They have not announced when they will release any additional information about the new integrated reasoning section, so we can't say when test prep will be available. The absolute worst case scenario would be that they don't release anything until the new test section launches in June 2012. I would be shocked if they waited that long, however, because then they'd have pretty much nobody signing up to take it for the first few months, and they don't want to mess up their cash flow in that way. :)

So, I would expect that they will start to release materials maybe 6 to 9 months before. Possibly, the test prep companies will have access to the materials before the general public does; that happens sometimes with new publications, such as OG12. It would take the test prep companies a few months to study the material and devise approaches and practice materials, so those should be well in place before the new section actually launches.

If you are planning to start b-school in 2013, then you will be applying in the fall of 2012. The new section launches in June of 2012, so some people applying that fall will have taken the old version and some the new version.

For that first transition year, I would expect most b-schools to accept both the old and the new versions of the test; it would be impractical for them to require everyone to have taken the test in June of 2012 or later when applying in Oct of that same year.

At some point, though, the schools MAY decide that they want people to have taken the new version - perhaps those who are applying for 2014 or 2015.

The good news is that you have some time before you have to make a decision. The year before you apply - say, in the fall of 2011, you can email the schools to which you plan to apply to ask them whether they plan to accept both versions the following fall. They may not know right now, but they should have a transition plan in place by then.
