New GMAT

by mgmatstudent1 Mon Jul 11, 2011 7:14 pm

Do you know how the new GMAT coming out June 2012 will affect those who are taking the test now? I do not plan on applying to b-school before June 2012. Will scores on tests taken prior to that date will be nullified or looked upon less favorably?

Hi Shane,

My understanding is that GMAT scores are valid for 5 years and the new GMAT does not change that. Common sense dictates that schools will not look at the "older" GMAT any less favorably otherwise everyone taking the GMAT between now and June 2012 are leaving themselves very little room for admissions.

This is similar to the question of GRE vs GMAT. A lot of schools have now started accepting both. However, they do not look at one as better than the other. If this were the case, they wouldn't have asked for both

Regards

Officially, the schools can do anything they want, so it is possible that they will eventually require only the new version of the test. My guess is that they won't even be able to consider doing that for at least the first year, because there's going to be a period of time during which they won't be entirely sure how to read / compare the old vs. new scores. So I think anyone who's planning to apply during the fall of 2012 or the fall of 2013 is probably going to be just fine with an old (or a new) score.

As I said, though, each school is allowed to set whatever requirements it wants... so there's no way to know for sure exactly how it will all play out.
