Need help with my timing of ending verbal section

by hemant.rao110 Tue Sep 13, 2011 8:27 pm

hi stacey
i wrote my first mg-mat i got 620 my math was 50 and verbal 27. In verbal until 33rd question i got 70percentile, but not even a single correct after that and my percentile fell down to 48percentile. Actually until that time i was doing verbal with hidden timer and i use to refer it for 5 of 6 questions but last 8 questions i have done without hiding timer and at the last question i was left with 4min even then i got that wrong..... help me regarding this for my better exam next time.

No problem! Read this. Start doing what it says. Come back here with questions. :)

Note that it typically takes people at least 4 to 6 weeks to fix timing problems, longer if it's a severe problem.

Main idea and the passage structure is okey with me.....

Hi,

I had very similar problems. This article by Stacey was very useful to pinpoint where I was going wrong:

http://www.manhattangmat.com/articles/a ... estion.cfm

My mistakes were:
-Not classifying the question by its wording
-Inferring too much - school day habits. On the GMAT, RC inference questions are very similar to CR inference questions. You cannot infer something that cannot be directly supported by the passage.
-Specific Detail - not going back to the passage to check what is explicitly stated in the passage.
-Stuck between two answer choices - the key here is to eliminate answers that are incorrect because of just one word in them

Working on these via OG and verbal supplement has improved it for me, but I still get the odd one wrong. This is a process change and requires a lot of discipline.

But the above are specific to me. As the article suggests, it will be different for everyone

Regards

Sunil

By "I had the same problem," do you mean you still had significant timing issues? How has your work with the timing article been going? What is working and what is still problematic?

Also, I'll repeat something I said in my last post:
"Note that it typically takes people at least 4 to 6 weeks to fix timing problems, longer if it's a severe problem."

Go back over that second test - have you gotten any better at the timing? If you are still having problems, what specifically are you doing that is problematic / messing up your timing?

You can also use this article to help analyze that test:
http://www.manhattangmat.com/blog/index ... ice-tests/

For RC, first we need to make sure that you're reading and taking notes appropriately, so start with these two articles:
http://www.manhattangmat.com/blog/index ... p-passage/
http://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/2010/07/ ... rc-passage

Then you can use these to help you on individual Q types (one of the below is the same article to which varun linked - thanks varun!):

Infer: http://www.manhattangmat.com/articles/a ... estion.cfm
Main Idea: http://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/2010/09/ ... prehension
Specific Detail: http://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/2010/11/ ... il-problem

As always, come back here with any questions about study strategy or techniques. (Use the topic-area folders for questions about specific problems.)
