NEED HELP ON MODIFIERS: DOUBT

by direstraits007 Sat Oct 03, 2009 12:43 pm

Hi Ron/Stacey,

I've one doubt which bugs me in every second sc question, which I attempt.
The doubt is between the :COMMA + ING MODifier" and "participles which use "ing" with them"
For instance:

Nineveh was long dismissed as Biblical legend by archaeologists, having no physical evidence that it had ever existed. [here "having" is modifying the main subject Ninevah.] <<please correct me if I'm wrong>>

Also, in case if we remove the comma "," from the sentence before the "having". Ie:

Nineveh was long dismissed as Biblical legend by archaeologists having no physical evidence that it had ever existed. [here "having" is modifying the archaeologists]. <<please correct me if I'm wrong>>

Now if we see this below sentence:

I found this in one of the princeton review tests:

When computer hackers released the "I Love You" virus in 2000, it raced around the world deleted music files and images, as well as raiding email addresses to multiply itself and send itself and other emails onward.

A) deleted music files and images, as well as raiding email addresses
B) deleted music files and images, as well as raided email addresses
C) deleting music files and images, as well as raiding email addresses
D) deleting music files and images, as well as raided email addresses
E) to delete music files and images, as well as to raid email addresses

Here the OA is C.
ie.
When computer hackers released the "I Love You" virus in 2000, it raced around the world deleting music files and images, as well as raiding email addresses to multiply itself and send itself and other emails onward.

But if you relate this with the above "Ninevah..." example, ie.
Nineveh was long dismissed as Biblical legend by archaeologists having no physical evidence that it had ever existed. [here "having" is modifying the archaeologists].

then I think "deleting music...." is modifying "world" in the same way as "having" is modifying the "archaeologist". ..RIGHT ?

so, how can an option in which "deleting music...." modifying "world" be the right answer?

I think option C will make sense if a COMMA "," is inserted between the "world" and "deleting..." ie.

When computer hackers released the "I Love You" virus in 2000, it raced around the world, deleting music files and images, as well as raiding email addresses to multiply itself and send itself and other emails onward.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I'll be glad if you can clear my this misunderstanding related to modifier with some example.

Thanks!

you are correct; there should definitely be a comma between "world" and "deleting".

it appears that you have a good understanding of the comma-ING modifier.
