Need help in SC & Strategy in Verbal

by Alok chandraS808 Sun Jan 08, 2017 3:40 am

Dear Instructor,

I recently took my GMAT test and was devastated to see my IR4, Q49, V29 score. I scored 36 in CR, 32 in RC, and 23 in SC. SC has always been my strength and I used to score well on those questions in all the tests. Later in the test, I realized that I score well in the harder questions (complicated and 3-4 error testing types), whereas I fail at answering easy SC questions - at least my ESR proves this. I also realized, I need more help in answering certain types of basic questions, which test the concepts mentioned in the PLACE THE WORD portion of MGMAT SC guide. My accuracy is very less in the problem sets of those questions. I just wanted to know, from which sources I can learn to master such questions and then reach to the higher level questions in SC.
Also if possible, please advise me on what my strategy for verbal should be, by analyzing my ESR. I am planning to re-take my exam in 45-50 days so that I do not lose my grip on the existing topics. I am trying to reach V40.

Hi! Sorry about the delay in posting. I think the images made this post get caught in our spam filter.

We have a Foundations of Verbal (FoV) guide that teaches topics (parts of speech, how to construct sentences properly, and other things) that the SC guide already assumes you know—so if you feel that you are struggling with some lower-level SC material, then FoV might be good for you.

Your ESR does show that SC is weaker than CR and RC. I would say that CR and RC are about the same (the difference is likely within a normal standard deviation), though it's possibly you have a slight advantage on CR.

The test is also showing that you spent too much time in the first 3 quarters and had to rush in the last quarter—and your performance dropped accordingly in that quarter. So there is a significant time management issue that needs to be addressed, too. It could be the case that you happened to get more SCs in that fourth quarter and then you were rushing and made mistakes. In other words, your SC might not be quite as low, compared to the others, as it seems.

What have you been doing to practice time management and executive decision-making on the test, particularly in the verbal section?

Take a look at these resources on decision-making:

And this for more on time management:

What other resources do you have access to, besides our SC strategy guide?
