Navigating OG Problem Sets

by OlusegunO966 Thu Aug 20, 2015 2:11 am

Hi,

I have a question about OG problems sets. I tried doing a search on the forum, but the search is not as clever as I would like.

My question is to do with how people (are expected to) navigate through questions in the problem sets. Looking at the Quizzes in the OG Problem sets document downloadable from the Student Center, each of the sets expect you to skip to questions on different pages. Flipping through to different pages obviously cuts into the allotted time. I understand that MGMAT is not allowed to print entire questions, but I was wondering, is there anything available to make this easier? Is there perhaps a way of creating those problems sets online and monitoring my performance on them?

There's a lot of information to take in, so I may have missed something.

Thanks

OG does allow you to do randomly-created problem sets in their online software, but you can't choose the problems yourself. So if you want to do a set that has pre-chosen questions in it (whether ours or your own), you've got to do a little work up front to set everything up.

This is what I do. I bought some little sticky notes that are just little strips, not full pieces of note paper. (You can also cut down larger stickies.) Then I use them to mark the pages for a problem set and I number the notes (1, 2, 3, etc) so that I can flip quickly to the next one.

If the problem is around the outside edges of the page, I place the sticky note so that it's actually touching the problem. If not, I put a second sticky note on that page placed directly on the problem I'm supposed to do. (If I have two on the same page, then I write (a) and (b) so that I know the order.)

Once it's all set up, boom, I just look for the next-numbered sticky note and flip right there - takes 1 second. (Also, because I'm super anal, as I take the sticky notes off, I line them up on my desk, so I can glance quickly to see what the next number should be, in case I forget.)

I could imagine that someone else would do something like this:
- place the 10 stickies (for 10 problems) sticking out of the book running top to bottom, so you just go to the next "highest" sticky left
- place a second sticky on each page directly on the problem you want to do

That's probably easier than my method but uses more stickies. I'm cheap. :)

I also don't use our GMAT Navigator program while I'm doing the problems. I just note down my answer on my scrap paper, hit the lap button on my timer, and move on to the next problem. That takes about the same time it would take on screen to click "next" and "confirm." Afterwards, I have my answers and my time, and I enter them manually into Navigator.

Agreed that there's tons of stuff to learn / do / remember. Let us know if you have any other questions!

Thanks Stacey! That was very useful. I've stocked up on postit strips.

I have one more question regarding the OG Problems Document (link removed by Stacey).

Is it accurate to assume that the Mid-Book quizzes, Final quizzes, and the "By Topic" lists make up a complete list of questions in the OG books? I'm looking for an easy way to creating OG problem sets that are exhaustive, and using this document would help me pick a good mix across the topics.

Thanks

The "by topic" lists collectively cover all problem numbers, with the exception of RC (we don't list specific problem #s for RC, since you do those by passage).

The quizzes are a subset of the problems.
