myth or fact

by karan13 Sat Jun 04, 2011 6:34 am

Hi.. i have given cat 1 and cat 2 and scored 620 on the first and 550 on the second .... my math on cat 1 was 49 and 42 on cat2... i was wondering if you can explain the dip.... the tests were given a week apart and i did leave practicing ques... also someone told me that cos a i got 49 on my 1st test thats y my questions were tougher on the 2nd cos... is that fact or myth?

i have also been told that the 4th RC holds no value on the gmat and there is no point wasting time on it.. i should just mark all of them and move on to try and get max CR and SC rite.. is that a myth or a fact

Hi Karan,

Are you referring to GMAT Prep or MGMAT CATs? As far as I am aware, one test should not affect the other.

Your other question on actual GMAT sounds like a complete myth to me. I know that some people who have experimented with the GMAT Prep software have found some tricks to get certain scores. But I am very certain that on the real GMAT, there is no such trickery or shortcut.

There are experimental questions on the actual test that do not count towards your score but you will never know which ones. You have to answer each question with the same sincerity.

myth and myth - Sunil's right.

Your score dropped on the second test because your performance wasn't as good for some reason. Now, you need to figure out why so that you know what you need to do in order to get better!

This article discusses some of the reasons why a score can drop:
http://www.beatthegmat.com/a/2009/10/26 ... went-wrong

Take a look and see whether you can figure out what happened in your case.

On the other issue, all questions are ultimately "worth" the same amount; it's not true that the 4th RC (or any particular question anywhere) is not worth as much as the others, or is not worth anything. (With the exception, as Sunil points out, of experimental questions on the real test - but you will never be able to tell which are the experimental questions.)
