Modifier: Coronary angiography, a sophisticated

by varunmehta.ism Sat Jul 13, 2013 1:50 am

Coronary angiography, a sophisticated method for diagnosing coronary disease involving the introduction of a dye into the arteries of the heart, is now administered selectively, because it uses x-rays to observe cardiac function.
(A) for diagnosing coronary disease involving the introduction of a dye into the arteries of the heart, is now administered selectively, because it uses
(B) for diagnosing coronary disease involving the introduction of a dye into the arteries of heart, is now administered selectively, because of using
(C) for diagnosing coronary disease, involves the introduction of dye into the arteries of the heart and is now administered selectively, because it uses
(D) to diagnose coronary disease that involves the introduction of a dye into the arteries of the heart, is now administered selectively, because it uses
(E) to diagnose coronary disease involving the introduction of a dye into the arteries of the heart, which is now administered selectively, uses

OA: C
Why not A?
involving the introduction of a dye into the arteries of the heart correctly modifies a sophisticated method as for diagnosing coronary disease can be considered mission critical modifier.

Hi,

Option A: says disease is involving the introduction of a dye into arteries of heart. Also, there is a modifier issue. What is "is now administered selectively" is modifying?

Coronary angiography is now administered - is not correct, since it is a dye that is now administered selectively in to the arteries of the heart. Where as

Option C: says

Coronary angiography,
a sophisticated method for diagnosing disease,
involves the introduction of a dye into the arteries of heart and
is now administered selectively,
because it uses.....

I think, on the basis of this reasons Option C is the best option.

Kamlesh is 50% right here. There's a big modifier issue that separates A/C. Compare:

A) Coronary angiography (, a sophisticated method for diagnosing coronary disease involving the introduction of a dye into the arteries of the heart,) is now administered selectively, because it uses x-rays to observe cardiac function.

C) Coronary angiography (, a sophisticated method for diagnosing coronary disease,) involves the introduction of dye into the arteries of the heart and is now administered selectively, because it uses x-rays to observe cardiac function.

In A, CA is now administered selectively.
In C, CA involves the introduction of dye AND is now administered selectively.

There's a big meaning difference between these two sentences. And when you see how the "involves the introduction of dye" is put into a modifier in A, you're left with this:

a sophisticated method for diagnosing coronary disease involving the introduction of a dye into the arteries of the heart

"Involving the introduction of a dye" now modifies disease. So CA is now something used to treat diseases that happen when someone introduces dye into the arteries of the heart.

Thanks jlucero. It does make sense when we look into the intended meaning of the modifier.

Thanks once again.

Ron, you said on the 6th floor in another thread leaching-the-recovery-of-copper-t11771.html?hilit=Coronary%20angiography,%20a%20sophisticated%20method
RonPurewal Wrote:importantly, in this sort of structure (NOUN1 + prep + NOUN2 + THAT..., or NOUN1 + (modifier ending with NOUN2) + THAT...), the "that"-modifier can actually modify either NOUN1 or NOUN2.

To me, Joe's explanation in the quote about choice A somehow contradicts your generalisation in that thread in the link.

So, I wonder what ,on earth, is wrong with Choice A and Choice D in this problem? I think, as you suggested, "involving the introduction of ..." in Choice A can modify "a sophisticated method for diagnosing coronary disease" , and "that involves the introduction of ..." in Choice D can modify "a sophisticated method to diagnose coronary disease" .

Besides, is the use of "method to do something" in this circumstance wrong? When should we use "method to do sth" or "method for doing sth"?
In terms of meaning, I discern no difference among A, C and D. So why is C correct, while A&D incorrect?

Thanks very much.

There isn't really a meaningful difference.
