Hi Ron,
I have a doubt on Modifiers concept.
While going through the forums, I have come across certain modifier questions , which have the following structure
Scenario 1:
Modifier 1 + Modifier 2 + Main clause ---- Both the modifiers modify the main clause ---- hence correct.
Ex : modifier-to-prepositional-phrase-t11131-15.html
Scenario 2
Main clause + Modifier 1 + Modifier 2 ---------- Both the modifiers modify the main clause ---- Hence correct.
Ex : the-anasazi-settlements-at-chaco-canyon-were-built-t2236.html
Scenario 3 :
{ Modifier 1 +( Modifier 2) } + Main clause --- Here modifier 2 is a part of modifier 1 and modifier 2 modifies modifier 1 and
modifier 1 as a whole modifies the main clause .
Ex : initiated-on-columbus-day-t14311.html
By seeing above constructions , can i conclude that
According to Scenario 1:
1)When two modifiers are referring to same Main clause(Subject),
we can omit one of the modifiers to check whether the other modifier is correctly modifying the main clause and vice -versa.
According to Scenario 3 :
2) There may be modifier 2 part of a modifier 1 and modifier 2
modifies modifier 1 and modifier 1 as a whole modify the Main Clause.
My question on above structures is that , if the Modifier 1 refers to Modifier 2 and Modifier 2 refers to main clause, would such a construction be correct ?.
Please shed some light on the above topic and explain me when can such constructions go wrong ?
Thanks in advance .
