modifers strategy

by mohanty.pupun Thu Apr 15, 2010 12:54 am

hi,

in chapter for "modifers strategy", there is s rule stating that
"that or whom can be dropped when the modified noun is the object of the modifying clause".

the eg: the movie THAT we watched last friday was scary. (correct)
ALSO, the movie we watched last friday was scary. (correct)

pl. explain how this rule is applied to this example.

how the modified noun is the object of the modifying clause.

regards,

The core of the sentence is: The movie was scary

The modifying clause is: that we watched last friday

In the full sentence, "the movie" is the modified noun and it is being modified by the modifying clause.

We could insert the modified noun "the movie" into the modifying clause as the object of the sentence:

We watched the movie (last friday).

In that sentence, "the movie" is the object of the sentence.
