MGMAT test scores

by YNWA. Fri Apr 05, 2013 11:01 am

Hi

My GMAT exam is on the 10th of April and i have finished all the MGMAT tests.

The scores are as follows-

CAT 1- 590

CAT-2- 580

CAT-3- 570

CAT-4- 580

CAT-5 -590

CAT 6- 640

1) Although on first reading the scores look pretty grim, but my on my
last paper i scored a 640. The reason for that is better time
management on the last test. Also i gave all the tests under the real
time test conditions and didn't see any question that i might have
solved during practice.

2) I have been brought up in an academic environment where solving
each question correctly is a priority. Hence i wasted a lot of time on
questions that i wasn't able to solve in the first go. As a result i
was just marking(wild guesses) the last 10-12 questions in both the
sections, and in most cases these answers were wrong. Therefore in my
last two test i changed my strategy and tried to stick to the 2 minute
per question strategy.

3) I have to admit that the last test score has given me a boost, but
i dont know whether i will be able to do better( get a 670-700). Could
you give me some advice on what i could do more?.

4)As regards to the MGMAT quant questions, are they a bit more time
consuming that the Official Problems.?

5)Similarly, i also found the CR answer options( after shortlisting 2)
too close to pick. Closer than the official problems.

6) Last point, rather question is that is the actual GMAT tougher/
easier/ at par ( in a broad sense) than the MGMATs.?

As for my prep i have done all my prep from the MGMAT series, solved
all the GMAT prep question( Question Pack 1), OG 13, 12 AND 10.
i would really
appreciate it if someone could just give me some strategy tips.I think i've goofed up with the timing barring my last test.

Thanks

If you want to go for the 670 to 700 level, don't take the test in 3 days. You've made some good progress with the timing, but it's going to take longer than 3 days to get further with that.

If you still plan to take it in 3 days, don't do much other than high-level review (and not very much the day before). Then let us know how it goes.

If you decide to postpone, let me know and we'll talk about a more comprehensive strategy, starting here:

Hi Stacey

Thanks for the reply and the advice. I am going to go ahead with the test. As you said i've been reviewing the questions that i've got wrong and more importantly the basics. Lets see how it goes. If i don't reach the target i'll get back to you.

Hi Stacey

I've given GMAT exam and unfortunately my score was way below MY expectation.

Q 48 V 26- 610

I was surprised and pretty disappointed with my verbal score. That's wayyy too low . In fact when I was finished my exam, I was confident that i'd performed better in my verbal section than my math section!! Infact i saw 3-4 Verbal questions(same/ similar) from the GMAT Prep pack and the OG's.

I had also timed my verbal section better than the quant section.

In my MGMAT's I scored-
34, 27 , 30(one question unanswered), 29, 28 and 34.
My strong point BEING SC and the achilles heel being- CR

I'm planning to re-read the manhattan strategy guides, because they were damn good when it came the nitty-gritty of solving questions.

However how can i get my score to a 36-37 level and how much prep time should i be looking at before i appear again, considering i can only book a date after a month.

Thanks in advance

I'm sorry that you didn't get the score you wanted.

Your verbal practice scores fluctuated pretty widely, and two of your last three were not that much higher than your eventual official score - so start there. Figure out why your score was going up and down so much and also what the factors were that led to the scores in the 20s vs. the 30s.

Some of that may have to do with how you were taking the practice CATs. Timing issues often lead to score fluctuations. If you sometimes skipped essay or IR (or did them but didn't try as hard as you did on the real test), that makes the test less mentally taxing, which can lead to an artificial score increase. If you have certain "holes in your foundation" and you happened to get more questions in those areas, that would lower your score. Etc. Go pick apart the data and see what you can figure out.

You can use the below to analyze your most recent MGMAT CAT(s):
http://www.manhattangmat.com/blog/index ... ice-tests/

Then come back here and tell us the results of your analysis and what you think you should do based on that analysis. We'll tell you whether we agree and advise you further. (Note: do share an analysis with us, not just the raw data. Part of getting better is developing your ability to analyze your results - figure out what they mean and what you think you should do about them!)
