MGMAT-SC guide Doubt

by sanyalpritish Fri Apr 30, 2010 12:19 am

That/Those

We have know "That" can be used for both Pural and Singular.
But in the MGMAT SC Problem-set there is a Sentence, in which "THAT" is removed and "THOSE" is put mentioning that the Subject is Plural.

Can any one explain:
Chapter : Pronoun
Problem Set Q no:5

"Some people believe that the benifits of a healthy diet outweigh that of regular excercise"

Please make sure to post the full text of any problem about which you're asking.

You posted the original sentence but not the correct sentence. The original is:
"Some people believe that the benefits of a healthy diet outweigh that of regular excercise"

I will assume that the corrected sentence is:
"Some people believe that the benefits of a healthy diet outweigh those of regular excercise"

The word "that" can function in multiple ways; one of those ways is as a pronoun. When used as a pronoun, "that" refers to a singular noun, while "those" refers to a plural noun.

In the example above, what word is "that / those" referring to? It's referring to the word "benefits."

"Some people believe that the benifits of a healthy diet outweigh the benefits of regular excercise"

In this case, only the plural pronoun "those" can refer to the plural noun "benefits."
