MGMAT Question Bank: CR, Question#4

by K. Ali Fri Feb 17, 2012 5:14 am

Hi Stacy,

MGMAT Question Bank: CR, Question#4

When a company refuses to allow other companies to produce patented technology, the consumer invariably loses. The company that holds the patent can charge exorbitant prices because there is no direct competition. When the patent expires, other companies are free to manufacture the technology and prices fall. Companies should therefore allow other manufacturers to license patented technology.
Companies cannot find legal ways to produce technology similar to patented technology.
CORREBT:Companies have an obligation to act in the best interest of the consumer.
Too many patents are granted to companies that are unwilling to share them.
The consumer can tell the difference between patented technology and inferior imitations.
Consumers care more about price than about quality.

My question: I think the conclusion is "Companies should therefore allow other manufacturers to license patented technology.". Due to two words, "Should" and "therefore" (Big Claim). But the explanation of this, says the conclusion is the Consumer's Benefit (first lines). I don't get it even after reading explanation.

Please explain
Thanks

Please read (and follow!) the forum guidelines before posting.

This folder is only for general strategy questions, not content or specific test problems. Check out the problem folders and post in the relevant folder depending upon the source of the problem you want to post (and make sure to follow the rules about banned sources). If you are a course student, you can also ask about other problems or issues before or after class.

This particular problem should go in the MGMAT Verbal Strategy Guides folder.

Also please remember to include the full text of the problem. It looks like the question stem is missing from the above - and I wouldn't be able to discuss this one effectively without knowing what they're asking. :)

Sorry for that.

I just finished MGMT CAT 2 test. The explanation is not satisfactory.
The Question bank has better explanation.

Please tell me where I can find "MGMAT Verbal Strategy Guides folder" you mentioned above

Go to the main forum page. There are tons of folders listed there. In the Ask An Instructor group, look under GMAT Verbal and then the subforum ManhattanGMAT Verbal Strategy Guides.

Also, you may want to search first. A lot of problems have already been posted, so you may be able to find a prior discussion and that might answer your question right away. If you still have a question, then you can post it in that same thread (so that you don't have to type the whole problem in yourself).
