MGMAT CAT1 Quant sectoin. Ambiguous question

Is x < z?

(1) x = 1/2y

(2) y = 0.5z

How should we read answer choice 1? we can read it as 1/(2y) or (1/2)y.

Please clarify. Is there a standard on how to interpret such question?

Can you please tell me the name of the question so I can look it up in the database? I want to see how it is formatted. Unfortunately, we can't use the italicized variables as search terms, and when I enter "is" and "<" I get over 1,200 records in response. :)

Thanks for letting us know about this. The question should have been more clear. I've updated it. There should have been parentheses around the 1/2, so as to read (1/2)y.

Combining both, we get 4x=z

But we dont know whether x & z are +ve, -ve, or 0.

Answer should be E.

Correct. The trap answer here is C.
