MGMAT CAT Grading

by sdore Thu Jul 17, 2008 10:35 am

I've taken 4 MGMAT CAT exams. On the first three, the majority of the math questions I answered were in the 700-800 range. I got approximately 40% of those wrong, generally giving me a quant score in the 45ish range.

On the fourth CAT exam, I got some of the beginning math questions wrong and the majority of the math questions ended up being in the 600-700 range. I only got approximately 15-20% of these questions wrong and my quant score was 50!

Is this representative of the way the GMAC CAT exam will be graded? I.e. does it make sense to try to get easier questions that you know you can get right?

Hi sdore,

First off, this is NOT how GMAC will grade the exam. You still want to get the toughest questions and you want to get them right.

The reason why you achieved a quant subscore of 50 on your last exam is because you actually ran out of high 700-800 level questions on our practice exams. The exam then fed you easier questions, which you answered correctly, and your score was skewed slightly higher. While this will not provide you with accurate results for the quant portion of your exam going forward, it does indicate that you are set to do well in this section on test day. Hence, you should refocus your study plan to bring up your verbal score.

Sorry for the confusion. Good luck studying!

Wow, you used up most of the 700-800 questions by your 4th test! Your quant must be pretty darn strong - nice job! :)
