MG GMAT CAT Math -vs- Real GMAT Math?!??!!

by winstonhu Mon Mar 01, 2010 8:51 pm

Hey guys,

In my past couple of MG GMAT CATs, I have scored 47 & 48 in quant, which is awesome, but I really want to get 50/51 on the real deal.

I noticed that in the MG GMAT the math questions are back-to-back tough and are relentless, not giving much room to breathe. And in the GMAT Prep, there are some hard questions, but also loads of easy ones.

Q: To get a 50+, how many of those '700-800' level MG GMAT problems will you typically encounter?

The reason I ask this is for time allocation... I know I can solve some of these problems, but not too confident if it has to be within 2minutes. If there are only a handful of super hard ones, then I will feel a lot better spendign 3-4 minutes on them!

hi --

on our exams, you'll be dealing almost exclusively with 7-800 level problems if you're on track to be getting a score that high.

the difference is that our exams don't have "experimental" questions. (technically, gmatprep doesn't either - since all those questions are retired from the authentic question pool - but gmatprep simulates the presence of experimental questions by throwing in occasional problems of random difficulty.)

another difference is that some of our problems - especially word problems - are LONG.
this is an area of concern that our recent CAT fixes are starting to change, but it's still good training - if you can handle our longest questions within the time limit, then you'll be absolutely golden when the test comes around.

good luck!

I have written MGMAT Cat 1 and CAT 2. My scores in both exam was 620.

Detailed breakdown is as follows:
CAT Exam #1 2/18/2011

SCORE & OVERVIEW OF RESULTS
TYPE SCORE ESTIMATED PERCENTILE RANK
Quantitative 45 77 %
Verbal 31 62 %
Total 620 76 %

CAT Exam #2 2/24/2011

SCORE & OVERVIEW OF RESULTS
TYPE SCORE ESTIMATED PERCENTILE RANK
Quantitative 39 57 %
Verbal 36 81 %
Total 620 76 %

I am concerned with the scoring.
In the CAT 1: In Quant- There were 20 Right and 17 Wrong
In verbal - There are 22 right and 19 wrong

In CAT 2- : In Quant- There were17 Right and 20 Wrong
In verbal - There are 25 right and 16 wrong

I wonder how can I obtain this score after doing so many mistakes.

That's exactly how the scoring works. The scoring is NOT based on percentage correct. :)

Adaptive, computer-based exams work very differently from the normal paper-based exams that you are used to. If you want to find out more about how the scoring works, read the Scoring section of our free e-book The GMAT Uncovered. It's already in the Extras section of your student center. (And, actually, I think it's also mentioned on the home page now that we've redesigned that.)

That'll clear things up for you!
